If You’ve Lost a Pet:

Losing a pet is incredibly stressful, but the sooner you take action, the higher the chances of a safe return. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Submit a Lost Pet Report:

  • Visit PetCo Lost Love to submit a detailed report. Include:

    • Your pet’s name, breed, color, and size.

    • Identifying marks, such as collars, microchips, tattoos, scars, or unusual features.

    • The last known location and time your pet was seen.

    • Behavioral traits (e.g., shy, friendly, fearful of strangers) to help others approach your pet safely.

    • A recent photo from multiple angles if possible.

  • Contact Information: Be sure to provide a phone number and/or email so that anyone who finds your pet can contact you easily.

2. Search Found Pet Listings:

3. Additional Steps to Find Your Pet:

  • Search your neighborhood:

    • Walk around areas where your pet may have wandered. Call out their name and bring familiar items (toys or treats) to attract them.

  • Post flyers:

  • Leverage social media:

    • Share your pet’s information and photo on local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, and other local forums.

  • Contact shelters and vets:

    • Call or visit nearby shelters, veterinary clinics, and animal control.

  • Stay persistent: Don’t give up hope! Keep spreading the word as pets can sometimes be missing for days or weeks before they are found.

    • Provide details such as species, breed, color, size, and any unique features.

    • Include information about collars, tags, or microchip IDs (if available).

    • Specify the location where you found the pet, including date and time.

    • Upload a photo of the pet to help the owner recognize them.

2. Search Lost Pet Listings:

  • Visit Lost Pet Listings on PetFinder or PawBoost’s Lost Pet Database to see if someone has already reported the pet you’ve found.

  • Contact the owner directly through the listing if you find a match.

3. What to Do If You Can’t Find the Owner:

  • Check for a microchip:

    • Take the pet to a local vet or animal shelter to scan for a microchip. This is one of the fastest ways to find the owner.

  • Keep the pet safe:

    • If you’re able to, keep the pet in a safe and quiet environment while you search for the owner. Ensure they have access to food, water, and shelter.

  • Spread the word:

    • Post the pet’s details and photos on local platforms like Nextdoor or neighborhood Facebook groups.

    • Use online resources such as PawBoost or LostMyDoggie to notify the community.

  • Notify local shelters:

    • Contact local shelters to let them know you’ve found a pet in case the owner checks there.

  • Be patient: It may take some time for the owner to come forward, so continue spreading the word.
